Starting August 15, travelers between Bangkok and Chiang Mai or Hat Yai will have one more option in terms of their daily flight schedule between the capital and the two cities.
Nok Air, the low-cost subsidiary of Thai Airways International, is bullish in two of the country's busiest domestic routes by adding frequency to its daily service, one each for the Bangkok-Chiang Mai and Bangkok-Hat Yai routes.
Nok Air is operating out of Bangkok's Don Mueang Airport.
Hat Yai is the country's third largest metropolitan center that straddles near the border with peninsular Malaysia in the southern extremity. It has been a trading center for much of its relatively short history as a town since 1949 and a city, only recently, in 1995.
The total land area of the city is relatively small but its economy has been growing rapidly since it was granted town status in 1949. Today, the city is teemed with tourists, mostly Malaysians, who come for shopping and nightlife entertainment.
Chiang Mai, on the other hand, is the gateway to the north of Thailand. The city, which was founded in 1296, once served as the royal capital of the Lanna Kingdom whose rule lasted for almost half a millennium, from 1296 to 1768. Modern Chiang Mai, meanwhile, is increasingly more cosmopolitan as it becomes a popular tourist destination in the country. While the city itself attracts a good number of foreign tourists, domestic tourists still make up the bulk of its visitors.
Nok Air is taking advantage of the two cities' growing popularity among tourists, both local and foreign alike, with the addition of flight frequency.
The additional frequency on the Bangkok-Chiang Mai route will become the airline's 7th daily flight. The flight, DD8308, leaves Bangkok at 0955 in midmorning and arrives Chiang Mai at 1105. The return flight, DD8309, takes off at 1140 back to Bangkok and arrives at 1245 hours.
The additional flight, DD7120, on the Bangkok-Hat Yai route, meanwhile, departs Bangkok at 1830 and touches down at 1955 in Hat Yai. The return flight, DD7121, leaves Hat Yai at 2025 and back in Bangkok at 2150 hours. The additional flight will be the airline's eighth daily service on this route.
