A new mezzanine floor was built at the Suvarnabhumi Airport, to provide a new screening zone for its passengers. According to the airport's deputy manager Narongchai Tanadchangsaeng, the present screening zone situated on the departure hall's fourth floor, near to the passport control section, is already too small to accommodate the growing number of passengers. He added that the new zone will be much bigger than the present one, probably by as much as four times.
Narongchai also mentioned that the construction was finished recently and the only things left to do are to install the necessary equipments and some final checking. These will last for two months at most. The new screening zone can be found adjacent to the airport's passport control section.
With this expansion, it is expected that the airport will be able to hold more passengers. At present, the maximum capacity of Suvarnabhumi Airport is 45 million.
Narangchai noted that the airport's biggest problem would be managing queues and minimizing waiting times at the check-in area, passport control section, and baggage zone. They hope that the new technology will be able to help them with that.
For instance, 16 autochannels have been constructed, and more workers employed to fill all immigration counters, particularly at peak hours. These are expected to help decrease the amount of passengers waiting for their turn at the check-in counters.
Their next aim is to make the baggage handling procedure better. Improvement will include the use of a technology that will tell passengers when they will get their luggage, thereby easing their worries. Plans to install wi-fi are also underway, as the management believes it is necessary for the passengers to stay connected.
Regarding the airport expansion, Narongchai stated that they expect it to be completed by 2017. He noted that they are still selecting the consultant for the expansion project. The construction plans are already finished.
