Yala will soon have its own airport as planned by the Department of Civil Aviation in its recent disclosure. The new aerodrome will be built along the border district of Betong at the tune of B1.2 billion.
According to Seree Jitsopha, the Director-General of the Department of Civil Aviation, the funding of the construction of the new airport will come from the 2015 national budget.
Though the department has successfully acquired large swathes of land where the airport is planned to be constructed, it still continues to negotiate with the two remaining lot owners who continue to refuse to sell their lots at the prices offered by the government. He added that if these lot owners continue to refuse their offers, the Department of Civil Aviation will have no choice but expropriate the lands, as a last resort.
The new airport, in comparison to Phuket airport, will have a shorter runway, at 1.8 kilometers. This means that it will only be designed for smaller aircraft.
The Department of Civil Aviation is also considering to build more airports in other places of the country such as Surin and Amnat Charoen in Isarn and Satun, down south. The government is currently conducting a feasibility study on these projects and no specific dates yet has been announced as to their implementation.
Mr Seree, however, disclosed that the proposed site for the airport in Surin might not push through after all, as it is too close to the town proper which might hinder future expansion.
Satun, on the other hand, has a small airport used mainly by the air force. The airport in Amnat Charoen, meanwhile, is a military airport and owned by the Thai army.
The proposals of building commercial airports in these four areas were suggested by the residents themselves. However, any proposal for public infrastructures such as airports need to be approved by the National Economic and Social Development Board.
