Thai Airways' owned subsidiary, Thai Smile, is set to launch more routes this year as part of its network expansion effort.

Thai Smile, a light-premium branded airline, will launch five additional international routes from its hub in Bangkok and Phuket starting March 31.

Woranate Laprabang, the airline's Managing Director, disclosed that the five routes will be distributed as follows: three to India - Ahmedabad from Bangkok and New Delhi and Mumbai from Phuket; one from Bangkok to Mandalay and one from Phuket to Kuala Lumpur.

Thai Smile will launch its Ahmedabad route in March 31, to be followed by an inaugural flight from Phuket to New Delhi on April 1 and a maiden service also from Phuket to Mumbai on April 3. Each of these flights will be a two-times weekly service.

Also in March 31, the inaugural flight of the five-times weekly service from Bangkok to Mandalay, Myanmar will commence. The four-times weekly Phuket-Kuala Lumpur route, meanwhile, will be launched on April 2.

According to Korakot Chatasingha, THAI's New Delhi General Manager, the airline's expansion into India is a response to the increasing demand from its Indian customers who consider Thailand as one of their favorite destinations.

Thai Smile hopes to capitalize on India's growing travel market to Thailand, posting a record of more than one million arrivals in 2012.

The airline will have a frequency of 134 flights per week scheduled for this summer across seven domestic routes and six international destinations. THAI hopes to increase the market share of its subsidiary with the opening of new routes. Thai Smile's major rivals on domestic and regional routes are the budget carriers.

The light-premium airline is hoping that it would draw customers back to its favor after low-cost competitors, such as AirAsia, have eroded much of its market share.
