39-year old Andre Steinemann from Switzerland was arrested on Monday at Phuket Airport in Thailand after it was discovered he was carrying live ammunition in his suitcase. The arrest was made by Tha Chatchai Police Chief Colonel Somchay Sansprasert, officials from the Royal Navy 3rd Area Command and Immigration Police.

Immediately after the machine showed an image of what could be ammo in Steinemann's suitcase the x-ray technician summoned the security team at the airport. Opening the Samsonite suitcase, Wantana Sirijantarachart found two 9mm bullets and one Sig Sauer magazine and then promptly called the police.

In his own admission, Mr. Steinemann did not have a permit to carry the ammunition, so he was taken by the police to the nearby station where he was charged with illegal possession of ammo.

After the arrest, Phuket Airport Director Monrudee Gettuphan said:

'The PIA together with Tha Chatchai Police, Royal Navy Third Area Command and airport security officers are working to give travellers maximum security. We have set up additional security checkpoints at the entrance to the passenger terminal and added more patrol officers at both the arrival and departure terminals. We have mobile units that patrol the car park and other areas, especially Airside.'

Phuket International Airport Expansion in May

Meanwhile, the much anticipated expansion of the Phuket International Airport (PIA) is confirmed for May 2016 by the airport director, Mr. Monrudee.

He said:

'We are not 83.69 per cent done. There will be an additional 10 bays and four aerobridges. We are doing what is necessary to ensure everything runs perfectly.'

The airport will go through two more trial phases within the next two months before a 'soft' opening for Valentine's Day. The grand opening, however, is scheduled for May next year.

The entire expansion of the Phuket International Airport was worth 5.7 billion baht.
