The publicly-listed company has predicted a travel surge during the peak tourism season this year, projecting a total of no less than 50 million travelers passing through its six major international airports.

Thailand's peak tourism season usually lasts for five months, starting October until March. According to AOT acting president, Nirandra Theeranatsin, the travel demand in the country will see its passenger arrivals to hit the 50 million mark this year, which is 10% more than the same period last year.

Aside from Bangkok's two major international gateways, Suvarnabhumi and Don Mueang, AOT also operates four other international airports namely, Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Phuket and Hat Yai.

With the expected surging travel demand, the number of flights is also projected to swell by 6.6% than the previous year to more than 337,000. Aside from the additional flights operated by existing carriers, additional services from new players will contribute the growing number of flights operating from these airports.

Some of the airlines operating from Don Mueang International Airport are already planning to mount additional services during the season. These include Thai AirAsia, Thai AirAsia X, Nok Air, NokScoot, Scoot and Thai Lion Air.

The country's biggest and main gateway, Suvarnabhumi Airport, is expected to handle 826 flights daily during the peak season. The airport normally handles an average of 780 flights daily during the regular season. Consequently, the volume of passengers is expected to surge to almost 138,000 daily, up from the normal average volume of 122,600 passengers.

Don Mueang International Airport, meanwhile, is projected to handle a significant increase in daily flights from the normal 515 flights to 526 flights per day during the 5-month peak season. The daily passenger traffic, likewise, is foreseen to breach the 71,000 mark from the current 68,500 daily traffic.

Airlines operating from Suvarnabhumi, Don Mueang, Chiang Mai and Phuket airports are already seeking approval of their request from aviation regulator for additional flights.

Phuket International Airport, the country's third largest airport in terms of flights and passenger volume, is expected to handle more than 233 flights and 36,000 passengers daily.

Chiang Mai International Airport, on the other hand, is projected to handle 180 flights and 22,700 passengers daily.
