Prior to the delivery of the ATR72 turboprop, Kan Air was operating with a single aircraft on its daily and weekly services between Chiang Mai and neighboring cities mostly in northern region of Thailand.
The new acquisition is under lease agreement entered into by the airline's parent company, Kannithi Aviation Co. Ltd., with Nordic Aviation Capital, a Danish aircraft leasing company. NAC claims to be the world's largest independent regional aircraft turboprop trading and leasing company whose headquarters are based in Billund, Denmark.
The turboprop bearing an aircraft registration HS-KAD is the first of the two such aircraft to be leased from NAC. The second plane will join Kan Air's fleet early next year.
The new ATR72-500 turboprop is an upgraded version of the -210 variant. It has a capacity of up to 68 passengers and 2 crew.
The airline's current fleet consists of a single Cessna 208B Grand Caravan, which can accommodate up to 12 passengers since it started operations in 2010.
Kan Air will rely heavily on the new aircraft for its daily operations on routes where passenger demand is high. These routes from Chiang Mai include Khon Kaen, Mae Hong Son, and Ubon Ratchathani. Other routes that the airline will open upon the delivery of the second turboprop next year include Hua Hin, Mae Sot, and Nakhon Ratchasima.
