If plans push through, passengers within Phuket airport will soon benefit from free shuttle rides from the airport to beaches and a park which are popular destinations among tourists visiting the island.
The shuttle will originate from Phuket airport, bringing passengers to designated points in Karon and Rawai beaches as well as in Saphan Hin seaside park.
The proposed free shuttle ride was taken up during a meeting on Tuesday among representatives from Airports of Thailand (AOT), Phuket and Nisit Jansomwong, current governor of Phuket. The meeting was targeted at providing assistance to AOT in overseeing and organising Thai airports under its responsibility.
Meanwhile, Sarayuth Mallam, a political consultant suggested that the proponents come up with three lines for the shuttle ride. Sarayuth believes that three lines namely airport to Bangtao-Kamala-Patong-Karon and airport to Bang Ku-Chaofa West-Rawai lines as well as one other line leading to Saphan Hin would be feasible.
On the other hand, Sathirapong Na Takuatoong, head of Phuket's Tourism Business Association expressed concern for those who work for existing transport services in the area, citing that the free shuttle ride should not jeopardize the incomes of these groups. He suggests implementing a waiting time for passengers availing of the free shuttle ride. Those who cannot wait may opt for transport services for hire. This will lessen the impact on incomes of taxi operators in the area.
According to AOT, Phuket deputy director, a shuttle bus and an airport bus will be used for ferrying purposes.
Passengers traveling from points to and from the airport will take the shuttle bus. This ride will have assigned points of pick up and drop off. On the other hand, the airport bus will accommodate pick up and drop off at points preferred by passengers, provided that these are along the airport bus route.
The AOT deputy added that passengers will be required to present boarding passes prior to availing of these free rides.
At present, there are two non-AOT airport buses plying the Phuket town and Kata-Karon routes.
