Beginning August 11, 2012, Malaysia's full-service community airline, Firefly, will relaunch its direct flights from Penang to Koh Samui in Thailand.

The resumption of its direct service to Koh Samui after nearly four years of absence was a said to be a rebranding process, according to Azman Ahmad, the head of Customer Experience and Sales.

Although branded as a low-cost airline, Firefly is a full-service point to point carrier owned and operated by Malaysian Airlines whose base is in Penang International Airport. It first started its Penang-Koh Samui service back in 2007 but aborted it shortly after a year of lukewarm response from the traveling public.

Though they kept their direct flights to the Thai island from its Subang hub.

The relaunch came on the heels of its busy Subang-Koh Samui route which offers alternative route to the Thai resort island. The one way-fare from Penang to Koh Samui costs as low as RM299.

In addition to its regular flights, the budget carrier has also partnered with two hotels in Koh Samui for their holiday package offers. Travelers can get detailed information on their promotions at their official website, www.fireflyz.com.my.

The fast growing leisure market of Malaysia's northern corridor has triggered the company to make a decision to reintroduce its direct Penang-Koh Samui service in the hope of getting a sizable share of the market and gain additional passengers.

Azman also revealed that the airline is hoping to attract leisure tourists especially from Japan, Korea, India and the Middle East who want to spend their holidays in Penang, considered as the most preferred destination for this market segment

Tropical island destinations are generally viewed as the biggest attraction for holiday travelers from these countries who seek warm but mild weather. The resumption of the direct service between Thailand's top resort destination and Malaysia's popular holiday destination will definitely give travelers and tourists easy access to the region's most popular tourist destinations.

According to Azman, starting August 10 this year, the low-cost carrier will mount more flights to popular and high-traffic destinations in order to strengthen its captive market. Flights from its Penang hub to Subang and Kota Baharu will see an additional of two and four flights, respectively.
