The two carriers have existing codeshare agreement, and the recent signing of a new agreement will expand the coverage to include more flights operated by Bangkok Airways originating from the Thai capital to Japan.
Under the expanded agreement, the Japanese carrier will be able to sell seats to its customers on routes operated by Bangkok Airways from three Japanese airports of Haneda, Kansai and Narita, to eight Southeast Asian destinations. These include Chiang Rai (Thailand), Luang Prabang, Vientiane (Laos), Mandalay, Nay Pyi Taw and Yangon (Myanmar), and Phnom Penh and Siem Reap (Cambodia).
In the old codeshare agreement, only 5 Bangkok Airways-operated routes were covered. These include Chiang Mai, Phuket and Koh Samui (Thailand) as well as Mumbai (India) and Male (Maldives).
The expanded code-share agreement was expected to take effect on Wednesday.
JAL flies to the Thai capital twice daily from Tokyo's Haneda Airport and once-daily service each from Narita International Airport and Osaka's Kansai International Airport.
The additional 8 routes in the expanded codeshare agreement with JAL will bring the total to 13 of codeshared flights, representing more than half of the Thai carrier's total number of destinations of 23.
Bangkok Airways also flies to 10 other destinations namely: Pattaya, Singapore, Sukhothai, Trat, Udon Thani, Krabi, Kuala Lumpur, Hong Kong and Dhaka.
Aside from Japan Airlines, Bangkok Airways has existing code-share agreements with 14 other carriers. It started its partnership with JAL when both airlines signed a code-share agreement in November 2012.
