Chiang Rai is a historic city located in northern Thailand, some 60 kilometers south of the Burmese border and less than 55 kilometers southwest of the Golden Triangle.
The city's long history dates back to the second half of the 13th century when it was founded by King Mengrai in 1262 and made it his Kingdom's capital.
The regional airline launched its inaugural service to the city on March 28 using the narrow-body A320 aircraft in an all-economy journey. It initially offers two times daily service from the capital which lies some 860 kilometers to the south.
Its only competition in the said route is coming from Thai Airways which offers three times daily service.
The airline's President,Mr Puttipong Prasarttong-Osoth, sees potential in Chiang Rai which he describes as a competitive market for domestic air travel. He added that the ancient capital offers visitors a unique experience with many ancient temples and religious landmarks lying just a few minutes away by land transportation.
It is considered as an alternative tourist destination to Chiang Mai which lies 200 kilometers to the southwest of the city.
Bangkok Airways has been banking on leisure destinations and the addition of Chiang Rai to its network is a good business strategy to attract foreign tourists who are into nature and cultural travels. The airline hopes that they will be able to continue offering customers the best travel experience across Thailand which is Asia's 4th most visited country in 2012 attracting more than 19 million foreign visitors.
