The State Railway of Thailand (SRT) through its subsidiary SRT Electrified Train (SRTET) is planning to offer off-site check-in services for air travelers at its Makkasan Airport Rail Link station.
SRTET is trying to convince airlines operating from Suvarnabhumi Airport to take advantage of the opportunity to offer their passengers the convenient way to check in.
The service is akin to Hong Kong's Airport Express's own in-town check-in service which enables passengers to check in at two of its stations in the city center up to 24 hours before their scheduled departure.
The managing director of the company, Phirakan Kaeowongwattana, is hopeful that more airlines will adopt the system which is a convenient way to check in especially those who have multiple luggage in tow. This way, the check-in counters at the airport will not get too crowded during peak hours where several flights take off at short intervals.
At the moment, only Thai Airways offer off-site check-in service for international passengers at the Makkasan station. The average number of daily usage at the present is about 10-15 passengers only.
However, the company official is optimistic that the number could go up as high as 1,000 passengers a day as soon as other airlines will offer the same service at Makkasan station.
But he added that they are planning to expand the check-in service as soon as support facilities like the development of commercial zones in the station like duty-free shops, among others.
