Thailand's neighbours including China and some countries in Asia are experiencing robust growths in their respective travel industries. This has triggered Airports of Thailand (AoT) to consider putting up a facility offering aircraft maintenance and repair to airlines.

AoT president, Nitinai Sirismatthakarn disclosed that the company plans to put up the facility but would like to confirm first if it is viable to put up one at Mae Fa Luang Chiang Rai International Airport.

He said that the proposed location has potential and that if plans materialise, AoT stands to gain from the various airlines covering flights in and out of the regions mentioned, including Thailand.

At present, a lot of airline companies owned and operated by China rely on Singapore-based aircraft servicing facility. For the Singaporean firm, this means big business.

As soon as AoT is convinced that the plan is indeed viable, it aims to partner with entities who wish to participate in the project as funder and/or developer.

AirAsia and Thai Airways International are among the airlines reportedly mulling over the possibility of participating in the project.

Thai AirAsia's CEO, Tassapon Bijleveld mentioned however that nothing is final yet from their end.

He also mentioned that the airline operates a similar servicing facility but this one is located in Malaysia.

It is however scouting for a parking bay for aircrafts preferably at Don Mueang Airport.

Meanwhile, Nitinai mentioned that with the rising volume of travelers this year up until the succeeding years, many airlines have ordered new aircrafts from international aircraft manufacturers. About 8,000 in total are due for delivery.

According to the AoT official, more than 140 billion baht has been earmarked for the improvement and expansion of the six airports it is currently managing. The expansion phase will be spread over a 10-year period.

He added that a big chunk of this budget, or about 86 per cent will be allotted for expanding capacities within the medium term.

Based on projections, the number of travelers going in and out of the six airports managed by AoT will more than double within four years, reaching 165 million by 2019.
