According to statistics used by Airports of Thailand (AoT), Don Mueang Airport has handled the most number of passengers flying via budget carriers compared with other airports around the world.

AoT president, Nitinai Sirismatthakarn said that on a yearly basis, some 22.5 million travellers pass through the airport.

Don Mueang airport is one of the six Thai airports run by the AoT. It was built to accommodate around 18.5 million travellers annually.

The president mentioned this while addressing a crowd composed of participants to the recently concluded LCC Airports Congress Asia held in Bangkok.

The LCC congress seeks to boost air travel and tourism in the whole of Asia.

Mr. Nitinai disclosed that the Kuala Lumpur (KL) International Airport is also one of the top airlines being used by budget carriers but Don Mueang outdid it by a margin of 500,000 passengers.

The AoT president added that Don Mueang airport has exhibited consistent growth in the number of passengers handled since 2012. Passenger count has doubled for the period January to June this year compared with last year's figures.

He mentioned too that the number of air travelers is expected to rise further in the next ten years. Major air carriers are beefing up their respective fleets to support this surge.

A total of 8,000 aircraft purchases were made by international airlines while 2,800 of these came from airlines operated by Asian countries.

According to Mr. Nitinai, countries like China, Japan, and South Korea will soon be launching startup airlines. The Aot President foresees that this too will likely boost the number of travelers going in and out of Don Mueang Airport.

In anticipation of this surge, airport officials are already pushing for the completion of the new terminal T2 just in time for the peak travel months. Don Mueang's T2 was supposed to be ready for use this month however this did not materialise due to additional repairs done on ticketing and AC systems.

Moreover, some restrooms also had to undergo repair and maintenance.

Mr. Nitinai however assured that once these repairs are done and the T2 is ready, the airport will be able to handle about 30 million passengers per year. This figure will go up further by 10 million based on expansion plans for the airport.

From 2014 to 2015, a total of 100 million travelers have been handled by Don Mueang Airport along with the five other airports being managed by the AoT.
