The international terminal building at Phuket International Airport has a capacity to handle 6.5 million passengers annually. However, in recent years, it has already been operating beyond its annual capacity, handling more than 9 million passengers in 2012 alone.

The rise in the number of passengers that uses the terminal building of Phuket International Airport has prompted the Airports of Thailand (AoT) to expand the existing international terminal building to double its annual handling capacity. However, the surging international traffic growth of the airport has already strained its present capacity prompting government officials to build a temporary terminal to cope this demand.

Recently, the Airports of Thailand allocated a budget of THB 145 million (US4.6 million) to construct a temporary terminal which will serve as a stopgap solution to the problem. This makeshift terminal will augment the current capacity of the existing terminal by 3 million passengers.

The current expansion project, which will double the international terminal's capacity to 12.5 million, won't be finished until 2015.

The temporary terminal facility is targeted for completion in December this year. An additional 10 check-in counters will be installed to serve the surging travel demand into the popular island resort.

According to airport officials, the traffic volume passing through Phuket International Airport is expected to reach 10.5 million this year.

The unprecedented growth in air travel across Thailand has also prompted airport officials to consider building another runway for the airport.
