For some time the Nai Yang Beach in Mai Khao near Phuket Airport runway was in a sorry state. What should be a nice beach where people could come and relax and take a few photos while airplanes fly low overhead while landing was filled with garbage left there by uncaring tourists and locals.

Not anymore. After several local residents went on to Facebook to voice their disgust at the state of the beach, Phuket Governor Norraphat Plodthong issued a direct order to send out men and clear the beach.

Over 300 people worked tirelessly and managed to clear more than 3 tons of assorted garbage from the beach, confirmed Witoon Dechparamualpol, Sirinath National Park Chief.

Chief Wilton said:

Phuket Governor Norraphat Plodthong yesterday urged me to clear rubbish from this area along Nai Yang Beach, so we joined with staff from Phuket International Airport and officers from Mai Khao Municipality to hold a clean-up this morning. We collected about three tons of rubbish from along the beach. Most of the rubbish came from the ocean and was washed up on the beach.

Now that the beach is finally clean, the question is for how long? At the moment, there is really nothing stopping the same thing from happening again. Chief Wilton did not give any specific on what actions will be taken to prevent people from filling the beach with piles of garbage tomorrow.

He said:

Next, we will hold meeting with Phuket International Airport to set up security guards to block people from entering this zone, which is the airport has declared off limits for safety. Too many people have been in the restricted area taking photos this week already.

One thing that could help the Nai Yang Beach remain clean and nice for visitors is the Airports of Thailand’s (AOT) Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) plan, announced today by Phuket Airport General Manager Phet Chan-charoen.

Mr Phet said:

The objective of this project is to keep the beach clean and beautiful, from the runway to Sirinath National Park, for the good image of Phuket.
