Thailand's leading budget carriers, Thai AirAsia and Nok Air, are on to a neck and neck battle as they begin operation from Don Mueang Airport today.
The competition between the two low-cost airlines is seen by many as a boon to air travelers as both entities are going to do whatever it takes just to get as many customers as they can to fly with them. With that in mind, both airlines will make it sure to make their airfares affordable enough to draw more customers and keep their existing loyal patrons at the same time.
The battlefield is clearly on the pricing arena. While air travelers are concerned about ticket affordability, they are also concerned about the in-flight service from the airlines. This is going to be a real challenge to both carriers as they need to be profitable amidst the price war to avoid bankruptcy.
Thai AirAsia will operate 73 flights a day from Don Mueang to 28 destinations, 16 of which overseas, using an exclusive fleet of all-Airbus aircraft, 24 A320s. Nok Air, meanwhile, has a fleet of 13 planes, mostly Boeing 737 aircraft, serving 19 destinations across Thailand.
