The Thailand government has placed the overhaul of the U-Tapao International Airport at the top of its priority list, along with the creation of a special economic zone. Both of these projects should start in 2017.
The first phase of the U-Tapao Airport overhaul will start this year, said Thailand’s Industry Minister Uttama Savanayana. According to Savanayana, it will include about 3,000 rai (out of a total of 13,000 rai) at the U-Tapao Airport.
Following the successful overhaul, the airport located in the Chon Buri province will increase substantially in capacity and will be able to welcome up to 3,000,000 passengers every year.
Mr. Uttama also added this about the future plans for U-Tapao and other Thai airports, as well as the plans for a second terminal at U-Tapao Airport:
We aim to link the three major airports, Suvarnabhumi, Don Mueang and U-Tapao, within this year. The linkage will improve air transport across the country and help boost trade and tourism.
The U-Tapao International Airport overhaul and the creation of an economic zone are both parts of a big project the Thailand government has in mind to build a brand new industrial city and attract high-tech investors to its Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC).
With the EEC project, the monarchy hopes to create demand for warehouse and logistic solution services and in turn create more jobs. Naturally, if this goes well, the domestic economy will greatly benefit.
The EEC project includes the provinces of Chon Buri, Chachoengsao and Rayong. These three provinces are to be labeled as a high-tech industrial cluster with the idea that they become the ASEAN region’s primary economic zone for industrial, infrastructure and urban development.
In addition to the U-Tapao Airport overhaul, the Thai government has also put the “urgent” notice on the creation of an EEC special economic zone. The project is expected to start this year and when finished, the zone should include some investment privileges, such as special funds and soft loans for companies that invest in the EEC areas. Another privilege would be giving five-year visas and work permits to foreign expats and specialists.
