Thai AirAsia Chief Executive Officer Mr. Tassapon Bijleveld announced today the launch of a new overseas route for TAA. The route will connect the province of Khon Kaen with the Chinese city of Kunming and is expected to kick off early next year.
TAA CEO did not, however, provide any details about the route.
Previously, the province known as the regional centre for education, financial institution and state offices had a connection with Luang Prabang in Laos, but that was short-lived. The route then was covered by Lao Central Airlines, but was stopped in 2015.
Aside from Khon Kaen-Kunming, Thai AirAsia (TAA) might also establish another domestic regional route from Khon Kaen and link it with Phuket. According to Mr. Tassapon, this could happen by the end of this year.
TAA’s plan to establish a new international route from Khon Kaen is a part of the strategy to turn this province into an international gateway for the region.
The LCC flies four times per day from Don Muang International Airport in Bangkok to Khon Kaen and once per day from Chiang Mai and Hat Yai airports respectively. Apart from TAA, Nok Air and Thai Smile Airways also operate to Khon Kaen from Don Muang, while Kan Air flies there from Chiang Mai Airport.
By 2020, Khon Kaen Airport will receive an upgrade worth 2.5 billion baht. This wills more than double the current handling capacity of the airport from the present 2 million passengers per year to 5 passengers per year.
In addition, the passenger terminal space will expand from the current 15,000 square meters to 50,000 square meters and the apron will be doubled. This will allow it to accommodate 10 aircrafts of Boeing 737 or Airbus A320 class.
The runway itself should remain at 3,050 meters, which is enough for wide-body jets.
Khon Kaen is receiving more and more passengers each year. In 2014, 900,000 travelers visited the province. That number was increased last year to 1.28 million and this year is expected to go over 1.5 million.
Most visitors come for meetings, incentives, conventions and exhibitions, but leisure and business traffic are also on the rise.
