The popularity of Thailand is known all over the world with its magnificent gilded temples, world-class beaches, the charm of its capital, Bangkok, as well as the world-renowned cultural traditions and its people.

For the 11th successive year since it received its first award, Thailand hasn't lost its charm this year when it was adjudged as Asia's most popular destination during the ITB Berlin on March 5, 2014 in Berlin, Germany.

The latest award was conferred to Mr. Thawatchai Arunyik, the Governor of the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), by Go Asia, a popular German travel industry group, during the ceremony recently held specially for the said event.

Go Asia is a popular travel marketing network based in Germany which specializes in Asian travels promoting the vast region to tourists around the world. Its members include airlines, tour operators and tourism boards across Germany. Every year, it conducts an online survey to its members to vote for the most popular tourist destinations in Asia.

In this year's poll results, Thailand again garnered the most votes for the 11th time in as many years since the Go Asia Awards were first given in 2003. Singapore and Maldives came in second and third, respectively, in this year's official results.

Mr. Nobert Pfefferlein, the President of ASR ' Allianz Selbst 'ndiger Reiseunternehmen ' Bundesverband e.V. (Alliance of Independent Travel Traders Germany) is the presenter of this year's award.

The TAT official was very ecstatic about the award expressing his gratitude to the award-giving body for the recognition that it bestowed to his country all these years despite the recent political upheaval that is happening in the past 5 months.

German visitors to Thailand numbered to more than 744,360 last year, or 9 percent more than the previous year. They were the third biggest numbers of European travelers to Thailand. On average, German tourists stay in the country for 18 days, each of whom spends an average of THB3,617 daily.

The country was able to earn THB43 billion from tourism receipts last year.

Germany used to be the top source market in Thailand but it has since been overtaken by Russia and United Kingdom, the two fastest-growing tourist market for the country. For 2014, the country is expecting more than 768,000 visitors from Germany.

Aside from Bangkok, other local destinations popular to German tourists include Phuket, Pattaya, Krabi, Phang Nga, Hua Hin, Cham-am and Ko Phangan.
