The clock is fast ticking as the low-cost brand of the flag carrier started to transfer its hub to the country's oldest gateway last August 8. The planned transfer of its base of operations shall be completed before the end of October.
Along with the move, the airline is also set to expand its service from its new hub, adding more flights between the capital and key destinations in the country such as Chiang Mai, Khon Kaen, and Phuket.
According to Suraphon Israngura Na Ayuthya, THAI Acting Executive Vice President for Commercial Department, the budget carrier will still provide services to its customers at Suvarnabhumi Airport while keeping its hub of operations at Don Mueang during the transition period. This will provide their customers at Suvarnabhumi convenience if they still choose to fly domestic flights through the main gateway between August 8 and October 26, the target completion date for its relocation.
The relocation to the older airport is a business strategy for THAI to give Thai Smile a better position to take on its rivals who are slowly eroding its market share.
Initially, Thai Smile will serve three routes from Don Mueang. These include Don Mueang-Chiang Mai, Don Mueang-Khon Kaen, and Don Mueang-Phuket.
Each of the Don Mueang-Chiang Mai and Don Mueang-Khon Kaen services will be a three-times daily affair, while the Don Mueang-Phuket flights will be a twice-daily service.
The strategic shift of its operational hub to Don Mueang will signal the start of the carrier's valiant fight against its rivals and hopefully win back their lost customers at Don Mueang. Thai AirAsia has been enjoying a comfortable lead by any measure in the country's domestic market.
To mark the historic milestone, Thai Smile is holding a special ticket promo offering fares for as low as THB900 for the two routes, namely, Don Mueang-Chiang Mai and Don Mueang-Khon Kaen while it offers THB1,090 for the Don Mueang-Phuket route. Tickets should be booked between August 1-31 for travel between August 8 and August 31.
