Passengers flying from Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi Airport to Phuket and Chiang Mai will be issued with electronic boarding passes on their smartphones. The electronic boarding pass will replace the conventional paper boarding pass that has been in use for a long time. The new system will be introduced initially on domestic flights originating from the Suvarnabhumi Airport.

According to airport officials, the electronic boarding passes will use the 2-dimensional "Mobile 2D Barcode Boarding Pass" system which is seen to improve check-in procedures as well as offer more convenience to the passengers. The new system is eco-friendly as it totally eliminates the use of paper.

According to Danuj Bunnag, the Ground Service Business Unit Managing Director for Thai Airways, the company will commence issuing the e-boarding passes to passengers using their mobile devices, initially through smartphones and tablet computers with MMS capability.

Saroj Yuttatri, THAI Vice-President, was very positive on the company's new service as it will enable the carrier to contribute a little to the environment conservation effort, not to mention, the utmost convenience which the passengers will enjoy as it eliminates long lines to the check-in counters. The new service can be accessible through most of the current mobile devices such as iPad and other tablets, mobile applications and games, as well as mobile phones.

If, for any reason, the passengers doesn't use any mobile device to enjoy such service, he can still get the conventional boarding pass issued to him from the check-in counter. All he needs is contact the check-in counter staff and present any identification card or document.

Once the passengers pass through the security, they need to contact the agent at the boarding gate, present any legal identification documents and give flight details. They will get the conventional boarding pass right away.

Passengers with the e-boarding pass can proceed directly to the designated counter at the airport where they can drop their baggage before proceeding to the immigration counter. They only need to show their mobile phone displaying the e-boarding pass to the immigration official, sans ticket. The e-boarding pass service is accessible through mobile devices that support MMS across all platforms such as Android, Blackberry, iOS, Symbian and Windows Mobile.
