The recently concluded ASEAN 2015 summit in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia opened opportunities for some participating regions to shift agenda and discuss other matters of particular interest including air travel, imports, and investments.
Heads of Thailand and Hong Kong for instance, were able to discuss plans to expand existing direct flights between their regions.
Thai PM Prayut Chan-o-cha was in discussion with Hong Kong's CE, Leung Chun-ying when the former broached the idea of expanding direct flights from Thailand to Hong Kong.
According to Thai spokesperson Yongyuth Mayalarp, PM Prayut encouraged the Hong Kong chief executive to conduct direct and chartered flights over Thailand's popular destinations.
CE Leung Chun-ying reportedly expressed his interest on the PM's proposal, citing that he will see to it that the plan will push through.
As talks progressed, the Thai PM mentioned too that Thailand could serve as Hong Kong's gateway to other Asean regions. On the other hand, Hong Kong could also open doors for Thailand by allowing the country to use the special administrative region as a gateway to China.
The two also discussed about importation of products as well as possible investments in infrastructure.
PM Prayut requested Hong Kong to increase rice importations from Thailand following a marked reduction experienced in 2014.
Hong Kong citizens now have a growing preference for Thailand's fruit products but CE Leung Chun-ying highlighted that in its entirety, the value of the region's importations from Thailand had actually increased.
Additionally, Thai's premier discussed Thailand's current infrastructure and businesses in special economic zones (SEZ) and had asked the chief executive to consider investing in these areas.
It was learned that the Hong Kong chief and his family have a particular liking for Thailand destinations like Phuket and Krabi, having spent many family vacations in these places.
