On that fateful night of September 8, 2013, passengers on board THAI flight TG679 from Guangzhou, China, met what could have been the most hair-raising moment of their life when their plane skidded off the runway at Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi International Airport.
The Thai Airways plane took off from Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport at 2125 hours (local time) for its 3-hour flight to the Thai capital of Bangkok. The plane, an Airbus A330-300, was carrying 288 passengers, mostly Chinese tourists, and a crew of 14.
As soon as the plane was about to land, its landing gear malfunctioned that sent the aircraft skidding off the runway. According to witnesses, a spark was seen around the vicinity of the right landing gear near the engine but is still to be confirmed.
An airline official told the media that the incident is already under investigation.
The pilot was said to be in total control of the aircraft until it came to a halt. An emergency evacuation was immediately carried out by the crew.
Fourteen passengers reportedly suffered minor injuries as they raced through the emergency exits down the slides to escape. They were sent to the hospital for treatment but were discharged shortly afterward.
The airline official publicly issued an apology shortly after to all the passengers affected for the inconvenience.
The incident caused flight delays to almost 80 aircraft at the premier airport. Incoming planes had to delay their landing time to await for the removal of the plane off the runway.
