The flag carrier for Thailand recently announced working with OnAir, an airline communications group, to set up in-flight Wi-Fi and mobile services in their aircraft. The launch is expected to happen mid 2012, with full implementation finalized by 2014.

About seven Airbus A330 and six Airbus A380 flying to Europe and other regional destinations are currently undergoing the new project's installations. It is a part of the modernizing investment programs for the in-flight products offered by Thai Airways.

When installation is complete, Thai Airways passengers can use their mobile device just like they do on land, using roaming services to make calls, send text messages and email while abroad. Passengers can use their laptops, tablets or other mobile devices during the flight and connect to the plane's Wi-Fi enabled device. OnAir says that the Wi-Fi works just like a terrestrial hotspot.

Thai Airways hasn't announced the price for the Wi-Fi services. So far mobile services depends on the rates offered by the passengers mobile operator, the same with the ones they are offering on land while one is using roaming services overseas. The price for connecting through Thai Airways' internet services is expected to be almost the same with what other airlines, offering Wi-Fi services, are already charging.

Late last year, Emirates launched its in-flight connectivity services with price plans of about US$7.50 for internet connected via mobile devices and US$15 for connecting through laptops.

An OnAir news release stated, "The US$7.50 package should be sufficient for the average BlackBerry user to stay connected all the way from Dubai to Paris - a flight of more than six and a half hours."

In-flight connectivity is currently becoming the norm as several international airlines started offering the added services over the past two years. Qantas last month, started their 8-week inflight internet and emails trial for its first class and business class passengers.

Airlines offering passengers on international flights Wi-Fi and mobile services are British Airways, Cathay Pacific, Oman Air, Qatar Airways, Lufthansa, Royal Jordanian, Saudi Arabian Airlines, Libyan Airlines, Egyptair, AirAsia, Aeorflot, TAM, Air New Zealand, Emirates and TAP Portugal.
