Thailand's leading budget carrier, Thai AirAsia, will launch a new service on October 19 this year to Wuhan as part of its network expansion to the mainland China. The new direct service from its base in Bangkok is its fourth route to Asia's largest travel market.
The move is a show of the airline's acknowledgment of the importance of the Chinese market to its international operations outside ASEAN region. The airline has shifted its focus from India to China for its expansion overseas outside the Asean region due to poor market demand and discouraging airport fees in the country's air hubs.
The Bangkok-Wuhan route is an addition to Thai AirAsia's growing network in mainland China. The budget airline has already been flying to Chongqing, Guangzhou and Shanghai from the Thai capital.
The low-cost carrier also flies to Hong Kong and Macau, both of which are special administrative regions of China.
A fifth destination in Chinese mainland, possibly in the central region, is already on the pipeline.
China is considered an important market for AirAsia Group, according to its CEO Tassaporn Bijleveld. He is particularly bullish on the Bangkok-Chongqing route, which has a load factor of 80 percent, prompting the airline to expand its network in China by opening up more flights and increase frequency to existing destinations.
Wuhan is the most populous city in Central China and the capital of Hubei province, making it a logical choice for Thai AirAsia's expansion to the mainland due to its geographical location.
The promotional airfare for the one-way 3 hours and 40 minutes flight Bangkok-Wuhan route is offered at 1,500 baht. The airline will initially offer a daily service using an Airbus A320 that seats 180 passengers for an all-economy configuration.
