The direct service will commence on January next year and will become the budget carrier's second international route from the country's international northern gateway. It will also mark the city's third link to Hong Kong as Dragonair and Hong Kong Express have already established direct services.
It is also the first and only Thai-based carrier to serve the route from the city.
All three airlines will have to contend with one another with their daily frequencies utilizing the same type of narrow-body aircraft - the A320 whose seat capacity can stretch up to 180.
Essentially, Thai AirAsia's closest competitor in this route is Hong Kong Express, being a low-cost airline. Dragonair, on the other hand, is operating as a full-service airline.
The planned once-daily service is aimed at serving primarily the leisure market of Hong Kong and northern Thailand.
According to the airline's CEO, Tassapon Bijleveld, Hong Kong has been a perennial favorite destination for Thais while Chiang Mai offers Hong Kongers a destination steeped in cultural and historical splendor.
Thai AirAsia has been serving Hong Kong's neighbor, Macau, with its daily direct service.
Hong Kong will become Thai AirAsia's 11th route to China and its 7th destination in that country.
The appeal of Hong Kong to Thai tourists is primarily due to a visa-free travel to the Special Administative Region of China. This visa-free travel allows Thai tourists to flock in droves to Hong Kong every year for leisure.
Chiang Mai, on the other hand, is the country's northernmost international gateway to the Kingdom of Thailand. It is promoted as a destination with many beautiful natural attractions, home of delectable Thai cuisine as well as ancient temples.
In line with the airline's launching of the Chiang Mai-Hong Kong service in January 7, 2014, it is currently offers promo tickets for as low as BHT1,290 all-in, one-way trip for travel starting on the launch date until August 5, 2014.
