After an accident early this month involving a Thai Airways aircraft skidding off the runway, Suvarnabhumi Airport will get another runway soon.
The building of a third runway at Suvarnabhumi Airport was now more compelling than ever following the incident which saw the temporary shutdown of the airport's second runway for three days.
The Airports of Thailand was tasked to build another runway for Suvarnabhumi Airport as per recommendation by the Office of Transport Ministry.
On the night of September 8, a THAI flight TG679 from Guangzhou, China was touching down the eastern runway when its front wheels malfunctioned causing it to skid. The runway was closed to traffic for three days until Wednesday night affecting hundreds of flights into and out of Suvarnabhumi.
The latest incident was ordered investigated by the Transport Minister by appointing a fact-finding committee who was instructed to submit reports within a couple of weeks. The aircraft was a THAI Airbus A330-300 carrying 288 tourists from China and 14 flight crew members.
Transport Minister, Chadchart Sittipunt, said that aside from easing traffic congestion at the airport which is now operating beyond capacity, a third runway is necessary in case similar incidents happen in the future or as an alternative facility for emergency purposes. It would be no more than 3,000 meters long, shorter than the present two runways.
The third runway proposal for Suvarnabhumi was discussed by AoT directors last week along with the proposed second runway for Phuket International Airport.
The Airports of Thailand operate most major international airports in Thailand.
