A proposal to operate a ferry service between Phuket Airport and Patong has been met by apprehensions as to its viability.
In a recent meeting this week headed by Tanan Tanpaiboon, former President of the Phuket Real Estate Association, the said ferry service project was tackled to a great extent. Mr. Tanpaiboon, however, is not in favor of the project simply because it is not feasible and economically unviable.
His negative response to the proposal arose from the similar proposal before, between Bangkok and Pattaya, which was aborted because of the same reason - the waves.
Mr. Tanpaiboon argued that any vessel that sails along the coast with one side constantly pounded by big waves would not only easily damage the vessel but also pose danger to the passengers.
He further stressed that the weather pattern in the Andaman Sea has been known to be erratic which would greatly affect travel time between the two points during bad weather.
Furthermore, he pointed out that logistics is another problem that stand in the way of the ferry service project. Moving cargoes from the airport to the ferry and from the ferry to the pier in Patong is seen as labor intensive.
Besides, he argued, a pier needs to be built near the airport which entails huge cost to the government.
According to Sarayuth Mallam, Vice President of the Phuket Tourist Association, they sent out questionnaires soliciting opinions from the public about the project indicating its economic viability and ease of travel between the two points.
Phuketwan has noted that the single biggest infrastructure project in Phuket right now is the expansion program of its existing deep sea port. This is to attract more cruise liners to bring in more quality tourists to Phuket.
