337 passengers of THAI Airways plane that flew them from Hong Kong were the first to test the new terminal at the Phuket International Airport on Sunday at 12:55 PM.
The trial opening was also witnessed by the president of AoT (Airports of Thailand) Nitinai Sirismatthakarn, who said the following about the occasion:
“This exercise today confirms the new terminal is operationally ready, but there are still some finishing touches to go, which will be complete in tie for the grand opening on June 1.”
Mr. Nitinai also said:
“The entire upgrade is to expand Phuket Airport’s capacity to 12.5 million per year. Current aircraft capacity of Phuket Airport is about 250 flight arrivals per day. And the airport can receive about 50,000 arrivals each day.”
Currently the airport can receive around 6.5 million passengers per year.
According to Mr. Nitinai, Phuket Airport carried a total of 3,385,527 passengers between the months of October and December last year and handled 23,055 flights.
The Hong Kong passengers were also greeted by a delegation led by the Phuket Airport Director Monrudee Gettuphan, who said:
“In use at the new terminal are our upgraded Standard Operating Procedures for the security and convenience for passengers.”
Mrs. Monrudee also said that she is looking forward to the full completion of the new Phuket Airport terminal.
“We still have the ships and restaurants to be fitted to the new terminal. All these upgrades together will provide much higher level of quality of service for all tourists using the airport.”
The airport is now also using the new security procedure, named “Advance Passenger Processing System”. This procedure was implemented by TAT (Tourism Authority of Thailand) and is supposed to make travel through Thailand’s main gateways safer for both domestic and international passengers.
TAT said the following about the new procedure:
“The APPS allows immigration officials to run instant background checks on inbound travellers, based on their passport information. Personal and visa details will be checked against all blacklisted or banned individuals. This ensures that any undesirables are stopped before they officially enter Thailand.”
The entire overhaul of the Phuket Airport, which began in 2013, is said to be worth 5.7 billion baht.
