Last year's statistics for Phuket International Airport arrivals showed a 20.22 percent increase or a total 8,467,995 arrivals and departures, according to figures recently released by Airports of Thailand (AoT).

International figures went up by 30.77 percent or 4,370,719 international arrivals and departures.Based on Immigration statistics, the figure was just within the estimated two million tourist visitors visiting Phuket in 2011 by the Tourism Authority of Thailand (ToT). The two million arrivals from international visitors measured up against Bali, Phuket's South East Asian regional rival. Bali was said to have an estimated 2.7 million international arrivals.

Though most property promoters suggest that every year Phuket welcomes eight million visitors, records from the TAT and the Airports of Thailand reveal that there are only about two million overseas arrivals. It is clear from the total airport figures that Phuket's number is rising; from 2009's 5,779,918, 2010's 7,043,783 and 2011's 8,467,995. A 21.87 percent increase happened in 2010 which was then followed by a 20.22 percent increase in 2011.

Phuket International Airport's maximum capacity is at an official 6.5 million and has been very popular for the past two years. The facility's extension, which is said to hold 12.5 million people, is estimated to open by in 2014.
