A Nok Air plane made a safe landing at Chiang Rai Airport despite the absence of a single wheel that went off shortly before it could touch the runway - thanks in part to the pilot who managed to take full control of the situation.

The aircraft, a Boeing 737-800, with 162 passengers and crew on board reportedly encountered mechanical problem in its landing gear. Investigations as to the cause of the incident are now underway.

The Nok Air flight, DD8714, touched down at 0915 hrs at Chiang Rai Airport after taking off from Bangkok's Don Mueang Airport at 0805 hrs.

According to initial reports, one of the wheels went off from the landing gear but luckily, the pilot skillfully managed to take full control of the aircraft and safely brought it safely to a halt on the tarmac without causing injuries to the passengers or even damage to the aircraft.

A spokesperson from the airline later admitted that there was no perceived danger when the aircraft lost its single tyre as it was about to land. The passengers didn't even notice the plane was losing its wheel during the landing. A loose bolt might have been the culprit.

Nok Air is a low-cost subsidiary of Thai Airways International operating from its main hub in Bangkok's Don Mueang Airport.

Nok Air is currently serves mostly the domestic market flying to major destinations across Thailand. The budget carrier, though, has recently expanded overseas with the launch of its first direct service from Bangkok to Ranong, Burma last month.
