Just recently, management of Suvarnabhumi Airport has banned its airport personnel from using disposable plastic and styrofoam food containers while at the airport's baggage-sorting zones.

While airport authorities have explained that the decision was chiefly for safety purposes, management wasn't spared from controversy.

The Airport's GM, Sirot Duangratana justified that management was only concerned with the possible hazard posed by plastic and styrofoam food containers being brought in by some personnel anywhere near the aircraft area.

These are foreign object debris (FOD) which might be left unattended or left in airport areas where FODs are strictly prohibited. This simple act of negligence could heavily damage aircraft and even compromise safety.

The GM said that airport personnel however have the option to use reusable food containers or lunch boxes made of stainless steel and other acceptable materials.

The new policy was disseminated on May 18 but personnel assigned on graveyard or night shifts were not yet covered by the policy as many food stores then no longer operate at these unholy hours.

Of late however, management has already set aside a budget so food stores can extend their hours of operation. Thus, regardless of work shift, all personnel are already enjoined to abide by the said policy.

Suvarnabhumi Airport won the title '5th Best Airport' in the 40 to 50 M passenger-per-year category during this year's Skytrax World Airport Awards. It also won the '6th Best Airport in the World' award from the Smart Travel Asia group.
