Days are now numbered for Bangkok's Don Mueang Airport's free parking as the Airports of Thailand Plc will soon implement a new policy requiring users to pay for their parked vehicles.

The park-for-fee policy at Don Mueang will take effect on August this year in its effort to increase revenue as well as improve its services within the facility.

The AoT will soon install an automated ticketing and fee collection system in the parking areas of the airport.

According to the airport's Director, Jaturongkhapol Sodmanee, the original plan was to implement the policy early July but they moved it to August to give them more time to test the system.

He, however, assured the public that parking fee will be at a level where most users can easily afford. He further assured that the fee will not cause adverse reaction from motorists who want to use the parking facility.

In its initial stage, the AoT will lease the electronic fee collection system from a private company until its full installation is complete.

According to the Director, his agency does not want a repeat of what happened to the country's premier airport where a private car park operator and the airport management went into a legal tussle leaving many motorists unhappy as a result.

He revealed that the automated system, which will cost the government an estimated 67 million baht, will offer no chance for corruption as no human intervention is involved.

The system will enable the driver to get a parking card from the machine upon entry and use the same card to pay upon exit.

The AoT also disclosed that it is planning to build pedestrian walkways linking the new stations from the Airport Rail Link and the Red Line and from Bang Sue to Rangsit.
