Chiang Mai International Airport, once again, posted a solid growth last year in terms of passenger traffic volume as it handled a record 5.5 million passengers.

The airport serves primarily the bustling northern capital of Chiang Mai and its environs including the northern regions of Thailand. Through the years, since its inception in 1921 as a small airfield capable of handling small aircraft landings and takeoffs, it has been growing steadily. The airport saw its historic milestone in 1970 when the government upgraded it to an international airport.

Today, Chiang Mai International Airport is the 4th busiest airport in the whole of Thailand next only to Suvarnabhumi International Airport, Don Mueang Airport and Phuket Airport.

Thai AirAsia uses Chiang Mai Airport as its hub for flights to major domestic destinations (Bangkok-Don Mueang, Hat Yai, Krabi, Phuket) as well as international destinations (Hangzhou, Hong Kong, Macau). The budget carrier launched its first direct international service to China from Thailand outside Bangkok.

Based on the record available from Airports of Thailand (AOT), it was found out that Chiang Mai International Airport posted an impressive 85% growth in terms of passenger traffic handled during the 8-year period between 2005-2013.

The airport handled a new record of 5.5 million passengers in 2013, or 2.5 million more than it posted nine months earlier.

In general, Chiang Mai International Airport has been experiencing rapid growth since 2005 up to 2012, except for 2008 when it declined by 6.6%.

The international passenger volume contributed the biggest growth increment, posting more than 60%. Of the total 5.5 million passengers passing through the airport in 2013, more than 800,000 of whom were international passengers.
