Overcrowding at the Don Mueang airport has become an ordinary scene especially on peak months. Airports of Thailand (AoT) is rushing the completion of its third-stage expansion which will help alleviate the congestion.
Nitinai Sirismatthakarn, president of AoT disclosed that his team is in talks with low-cost carrier Thai Smile Airways, discussing a possible partnership for the third leg of the airport expansion programme.
A wholly-owned subsidiary of THAI, Thai Smile Airways was founded in 2011 and started operations in 2012. It uses the Don Mueang International Airport as its secondary hub.
AoT intends to ramp up the expansion as the airport is already operating in full capacity with about 27 million passengers going in and out of the airport facility.
AoT already finished the first few stages of the development which includes renovation of one of the airport terminals. The renovated terminal
to be launched in November will bring the current capacity to 30 million.
The third stage expansion when completed, will further boost capacity to around 40 million.
The plan is to use the Don Mueang terminal one as the facility for all aircraft flying internationally while terminal two will be used by carriers covering domestic routes.
Once the third-stage development is complete, a second terminal will be made available for domestic flights. On top of this, a maintenance and storage facility will also be in place.
According to Mr. Nitinai, AoT is actively seeking for possible partners among the private sector to help it finish the third leg of the expansion project.
Prospective partners have the option to participate in the renovation as well as in running the terminal afterwards or, merely take on the role of an operating partner with AoT handling all the renovation works.
