If the proposed plan pushes through, the Phuket International Airport will have another income-generating vehicle to maximize its income through lease agreement by prospective locators.

The envisioned Airport City project for Phuket International Airport is just one of the three similar undertakings for the country's three major airports namely: Suvarnabhumi and Don Mueang, both in Bangkok.

Phuket International Airport was chosen along with the other two major gateways because of its size, in terms of the volume of passenger arrivals. The airport handled more than 12 million passengers last year, majority of which are international tourists.

The AoT is pushing for the conversion of all properties located in these airports that are underutilized into income-generating machine to optimize its revenue collection, thereby reducing its dependence on earnings it gets from aeronautical operations.

The three projects will have a combined price tag of over THB30 billion between them.

The Airport City project proposed for Phuket will have its structures limited to a maximum height of 23 meters as the airport is situated near the seashore, as mandated in the law. Therefore, all structures can be up to 6 stories high only with a provision for car park at the basement levels.

The proposed Airport City at Phuket Airport is seen to offer residents within the 5-kilometer radius of the airport a decent and world-class shopping center that the city is currently lacking. It is not only aimed for airport passengers, but for the general shoppers or local residents living in and around the area as well.

The airport is the gateway to the world-class beaches in the Phuket area that attract millions of international visitors to the province majority of whom are Chinese, Russians, Koreans and Scandinavians.

The airport is now operating way above its current annual capacity of 6.5 million passengers. An ongoing expansion, which is due for completion next year, will expand its capacity to 12.5 million.

The Airport City project will boost the airport's attractiveness to airline companies to put up more flights or open more routes to Phuket, bringing in more tourists in the process.
