AirAsia CEO Discourages Government Support on Carriers

Tony Fernandes, the founder and Chief Executive Officer of Asia's pioneering low-cost carrier, AirAsia Bhd., has spoken to Jeddar Economic Forum recently lambasting local carriers in Thailand from getting support from the government.

He said that carriers should stop asking the government for fuel subsidies as a form of support for their operations. In the same manner, he added, the government should allow local airlines to operate on their own capacity and free itself from such unnecessary financial burden.

According to him, this kind of support by the government to these airlines is a kind of misappropriation of public funds which can be, otherwise, better allocated on public education and health.

In every business entity, he maintained, the human resources are the key assets and investment should focus more on the nurturing of their talent and development of those resources.

He, likewise, emphasized the importance of employing the latest in technological breakthrough in tourism business to your advantage.

The airline CEO also claimed that more than 80% of AirAsia business is done over the internet and, she continued, the airline is now heading towards greater mobility as it has tapped the mobile platforms to grow their market base.
