Big plans for the international market from Thai Lion Air as the airline is looking to resume flying to Indonesia and launch flights to Vietnam and Myanmar. As the icing on the cake, the Thailand-based carrier is also considering adding new destinations to mainland China, including Beijing and Guangzhou.
When it comes to Indonesia, Thai Lion Air will return there for the first time in two years. Together with Bangkok-Chian Mai and Bangkok-Kuala Lumpur, Bangkok-Jakarta was one of the initial routes for the operator back in December.
However, political instability in Thailand in 2014 forced the airline to suspend their route to Jakarta, but now the carrier is ready to return to Indonesia and a big reason for this was the demand. According to Thai Lion, the demand for Bangkok-Jakarta is now enough to make one daily flight a viable option.
While Bangkok is a popular destination for Indonesians, local flag carrier and Thai Lion Air’s parent company – Lion Air does not operate to Thailand.
The company plans to operate two daily flights from Bangkok to both Ho Chi Minh and Hanoi in Vietnam, Thai AirAsia operates three daily Bangkok-Ho Chi Minh flights, Nok Air and VietJet two each and Jetstar Pacific one. When it comes to Hanoi, all four airlines offer one daily flight to this city.
Thai Lion will also become the fourth low-cost carrier to fly between Bangkok and Yangon, Myanmar. The capacity on this route has doubled over the last four years and Thai Lion will be facing some stiff competition with Nok Air, Thai AirAsia, Thai Airways and Bangkok Airways already well-established there.
At the moment, Nok Air, which was the last of these four to offer services to Myanmar, has three daily flights on the route, while the other three Thailand airlines operate four flights per day on Bangkok-Yangon.
Right now, Thai Lion flies to Taiyuan and Jinan in China, but has applied for more destinations. The plan is for the airline to add flights from Bangkok to Beijing and Guangzhou, Chiang Mai-Beijing and Surat Thani-Shenzhen.
If approved for Bangkok-Beijing, Thai Lion will begin service in June this year. The company has applied for four flights per week to Beijing from Bangkok and three weekly flights from Chiang Mai.
