Come January 2014, Thai AirAsia will be flying to the Special Administrative Region of China from Chiang Mai, Thailand's northernmost capital. Hong Kong will be Thai AirAsia's second international route operating from Chiang Mai, following Macau.
The only way to get to Hong Kong from Chiang Mai at the moment is via Dragonair and Hong Kong Express Airways, both of which are based in former British colony.
It will soon change.
Thai AirAsia, being a low-cost carrier, will have to contend head to head with Hong Kong Express Airways, also a low-cost airline in the said route while Dragonair is a full-service carrier that has no competitor in its own league.
All three airlines share the same frequency, which is a once-daily service, between Chiang Mai and Hong Kong. They also use identical type of aircraft, which is the narrow-body A320, in this route. The aircraft has a seating capacity of up to 180 passengers on an all-economy class configuration.
The once-daily Chiang Mai-Hong Kong service will commence on January 7 next year to capture a niche market of leisure travelers from Hong Kong.
According to the airline's CEO, Tassapon Bijleveld, the former crown colony has always been the favorite destination for many Thai tourists. Chiang Mai, on the other hand, is also a perennial favorite overseas destination for Hong Kongers.
The Chiang Mai-Hong Kong route is Thai AirAsia's 11th route linking Thailand and China as a region, which includes the territories of Macau and Hong Kong.
To promote the new route, the budget airline is offering promotional tickets for as low as THB1,290, one-way, all-inclusive for travel from the launch date until August 5, 2014.
