The plane was about to take off when it skidded off the runway as it made a U-turn.
As a result, the airport was ordered closed to traffic for both incoming and outgoing flights while the removal of the aircraft, an A330, was still ongoing.
Three local airlines, Thai Airways, Thai AirAsia, Nok Air, operate daily flights between Khon Kaen and Bangkok. Kan Air and Thai Smile also operate weekly flights on the same route.
Though the airport was remained close to traffic, it allowed passengers with scheduled flights out of Khon Kaen Airport, to enter the terminal for their transfer to Udon Thani Airport, the closest airport that has direct flights to Bangkok. Udon Thani Airport is about an hour drive by bus from Khon Kaen.
The aircraft, with flight no. TG407, was carrying 259 people on board, 11 of whom were crew members and 2 pilots. It was making a U-turn on the runway when the incident happened. Fortunately, all passengers and the crew didn't sustain injuries.
Except for the wheels that got stuck deep into the ground, the plane and its cargo didn't sustain serious damage.
Due to the incident, all flights were canceled by the airport management much to the dismay of many passengers especially those who had important matters to attend to.
Businessman, Yuttaveep Jirayuvattana, was scheduled to fly to Bangkok on Monday for a very important appointment with his employees but had to delay as he and other fellow passengers needed to go to Udon Thani to take their flight.
He was clearly upset by the turn of events saying that there has been precious time wasted and work disrupted.
Another passenger, Saranya Sirichayangkool, also showed her disappointment over the incident saying she wouldn't be able to see her doctor at an appointed time anymore as travel time to Udon Thani takes much longer.
