More low-cost airlines are seen to make Bangkok one of their favored destinations as the city has been aggressive in its campaign to lure budget carriers. This will likely prompt current airline operators to increase frequencies to and from Bangkok.
Recently, two regional carriers, Scoot and Thai Smile, commenced their respective services via Suvarnabhumi Airport. Scoot is the latest budget airline from Singapore while Thai Smile, dubbed as the light premium low-cost carrier, is a subsidiary of Thai Airways.
Scoot began its daily service between Singapore and Bangkok on July 5. Bangkok-Singapore is said to be the 9th most popular air route in the ASEAN region, utilizing the Boeing 777 aircraft.
Thai Smile, on the other hand, started its two flights daily service between Bangkok and Macau using Airbus A320.
Come August 10, a new low-cost carrier will start flying to Bangkok - China's Spring Airlines. Spring Airlines, China's only budget carrier, will commence its daily service between the Thai capital and China's most cosmopolitan city, Shanghai. Also on the same day, IndiGo, another budget airline from India, will add another flight between Bangkok and New Delhi.
The growing numbers of budget airlines flying to Bangkok is a manifestation of Thailand's popularity as a favorite destination for budget travelers.
This market, not surprisingly, makes up the bulk of budget carriers who offer tickets 30 to 40 percent cheaper than full-service carriers.
An industry analyst said that the possibility of getting more budget airlines flying to the Thai capital is positively high.
With the inclusion of Spring Airlines, Bangkok is now the favorite route for 18 low-cost carriers operating mostly through Suvarnabhumi Airport.
South Korea owns the most budget airlines with four flying to Bangkok. These are the Easter Jet, Jeju Air, Jin Air and T'Way Airlines.
The biggest budget airline operator serving Bangkok, however, is Thai AirAsia. The airline is positive that it would be able to carry 8 million passengers this year.
The total number of passengers flying through Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi Airport on low-cost carriers, both domestic and international, hit 8.27 million. Bangkok's Don Mueang Airport contributed another 1.39 million budget travelers.
