The local subsidiaries of the low-cost giant, AirAsia Bhd., have been busy recruiting seasoned pilots for the past few days, and now about to take in 70 more to add to their current roster.

The hiring of the pilots is part of the airlines' long-term expansion program, which includes the opening of more routes to both short- and long-haul destinations.

Thai AirAsia, for instance, is adding around 30 seasoned captains to its current team of pilots. All of the 30 newly-hired recruits worked previously for Thai Airways International before accepting the job offer by Thai AirAsia, which, at present, has nearly 400 pilots in the roster.

Thai AirAsia CEO, Tassapon Bijleveld, disclosed that the former THAI pilots wanted to join them primarily because they need to secure their future, in addition to a much attractive compensation that they will receive.

The airline is also sending about 40 student pilots to train at the prestigious Bangkok Aviation Center, after which they will be deployed immediately upon completion.

The long-haul brand, Thai AirAsia X, on the other hand, employs 26 pilots for the three maiden routes, namely, Bangkok-Seoul, Bangkok-Osaka, and Bangkok-Tokyo (Narita).

The short-haul brand, meanwhile, is set to expand its domestic and regional network. It currently operates 39 A320 aircraft in its fleet. It will take delivery of another jetliner this year while awaiting for five more planes next year.

With the expansion of seat capacity, the airline is expecting to grow its passenger volume up to 15 million next year from the projected number of 12.6 million this year.

The carrier is planning to add more frequencies to its existing routes and expand both its domestic and regional network by opening more routes.

For its domestic expansion, it will open Bangkok-Sakhon Nakhon route initially with twice-daily service starting October 1 this year.

It is also mulling the possibility of linking the popular resort cities of Chiang Mai and Phuket to international destinations like in China.

Thai AirAsia X, meanwhile, is weighing the possibility of adding frequencies to its Bangkok-Osaka route by next year. Currently, it operates a fleet of two A330 aircraft and is scheduled to take delivery of one more in 2015.
