Udon Thani Airport

Udon Thani International Airport (UTH) is run by Thailand's Department of Airports, a government department, and not by Airports of Thailand (AOT). It serves Udon Thani city, and it is a common way in for people heading on to the Laos border crossing at Nong Khai.

An active Royal Thai Air Force base shares the airfield, home to Wing 23 of the 2nd Air Division, Air Combat Command.

Who runs Udon Thani Airport

The Cabinet approved moving Udon Thani, Krabi and Buri Ram from the department to AOT in 2022. The transfer did not happen. Nation Thailand reported on 6 March 2025 that a deputy transport minister had said it would be postponed indefinitely.

The three airports earn well for the department, and the minister put them forward as the model for all 28 airports the department runs to become financially self-sufficient. As of that statement Udon Thani was still the department's airport, and the department's name is still on the airport's own website.

The terminal, and what the operator calls it

The department's own English caption for the airport's food area places a Food Center on the first floor of "Terminal B". The department's home, facilities and passenger-advice pages for the airport name no terminal at all.

Two items on the department's facilities listing for the airport carry English labels of their own: a Lost & Found service, and the Food Center above. Most of the rest of that listing is written in Thai.

Going on to the Laos border, and hiring a car

Flying here and driving on is a normal way to reach the Nong Khai crossing into Laos, but the airport is not at the border. Udon Thani province does not itself border Laos; Nong Khai, the province next to it, does, and the First Thai-Lao Friendship Bridge over the Mekong is there.

Budget, Sixt and Hertz each list an Udon Thani Airport location on their own websites, and Hertz gives its desk hours as 8am to 8pm daily. Check that the firm you want still has a desk here before you rely on finding one.

Which airlines serve Udon Thani Airport

Four airlines are named both on the department's own list of airline links for this airport and by third-party flight trackers: Nok Air, Thai AirAsia, Thai Airways and Thai Vietjet Air. Those four are the firmest ground here.

Two more are named by one side only. Bangkok Airways is on the department's list, but its own flight-schedule page offers thirteen Thai cities to choose from and Udon Thani is not one of them. Thai Lion Air is missing from that list. Its own site is indexed under the title of an Udon Thani to Pattaya (U-Tapao) route page, which nobody here could open past a bot check, and two dated reports from 2025 agree, one putting the start at 11 June that year. None of that establishes the route is flying now.

The same departmental list also links the Civil Aviation Training Center, which is not a passenger airline. Check an airline's own timetable before you count on a route.

Thai Smile no longer exists. Its last day as a separate airline was 31 December 2023, and Thai Airways took over its operations from 1 January 2024.
