Trat Airport

Trat Airport (TDX) is privately owned: Bangkok Airways built it and runs it. It is the way in to Koh Chang and the other islands off Thailand's east coast, with the ferry pier a short drive from the terminal.

Who owns and runs Trat Airport

Bangkok Airways describes it on its own page for the airport as the third public airport owned and operated by Bangkok Airways Public Company Limited, after Samui in 1989 and Sukhothai in 1996. The airline groups the three under the label boutique airports, its term for the set it owns rather than a description of any of the buildings.

Records give the official opening as 31 March 2003, with the first flight landing that April. The airline's own page places the airport in Khao Saming district, while other records place it in Laem Ngop, a different district of the same province.

Getting to Koh Chang from Trat Airport

A 2019 post on the airline's blog puts the airport a 20-minute ride from the ferry pier for Koh Chang. Boats cross from Ao Thammachat on the mainland to Ao Sapporot, on the north east coast of Koh Chang.

Older directions often name a different pier. Trat Ferry at Centrepoint stopped running in mid 2024 and had not resumed as of an April 2025 update, which leaves Ao Thammachat as the working mainland pier.

Ferry timetables give the crossing as running from 06:30 to 18:30, every day of the year. The crossing itself takes about 25 to 40 minutes, depending on the boat. Tickets cannot be bought in advance and are cash only at the pier, with cards and QR codes not accepted.

The same 2019 post gives the airport's opening hours as 06:00 to 22:00. An evening arrival can mean a night on the mainland.

A shared minibus runs from the airport to hotels on Koh Chang, and a taxi or pick-up truck to the pier is the other usual option.

Inside the terminal at Trat Airport

The terminal is described as small, open air and pavilion style, with rubber plantations and pineapple orchards around the site. Its single asphalt runway is recorded at 1,800 metres by 45 metres.

The airline's 2019 blog post lists free Wi-Fi, desktop computers that are free to use, and a reading corner with newspapers. It also describes lounge access for the airline's own passengers, with appetisers and drinks included. A small cafe, a restaurant and a cash machine are reported here as well.

The same post mentions khao tom mat, a Trat dessert of steamed sticky rice and banana wrapped in a banana leaf, sold at the airport.

Flights from Trat Airport

Bangkok Airways is the only airline listed as serving Trat, on a domestic route to and from Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK) in Bangkok, flown by ATR 72 turboprops. The airport has customs and immigration facilities, allowing a through check-in to a final destination, but no international service appears in current listings.
