Thai Airways International is moving toward constructing an aircraft maintenance centre for large-size planes at U-Tapao Airport, where they would also do repair and overhaul.
According to THAI Executive Vice President, Corporate Strategy and Sustainable Development Montree Jumrieng, the board of the company already gave a green light to a 30 million baht-worth proposal to hire consultants for the project. The consultants will be hired to oversee a feasibility study of the project.
The airline proposed that the consultants be selected via a special method, which would be adopted solely for this project, rather than through a conventional method.
He said THAI would need four types of consultants for the project, including experts in aircraft maintenance and repair, financial, international laws and project management.
Mr Montree also said that, unlike the project studied by the Office of Transport and Traffic Policy and Planning, this one is focused on large-size aircraft like Airbus A350, Aircraft A380, Boeing 777 and Boeing 787.
THAI Executive VP further said:
Over 300 Airbus A380s have been already ordered worldwide. Of this number, about 200 are in the Middle East which already has a good capacity for maintenance and repair. The remainder is the target for our maintenance centre.
The THAI board also wanted the feasibility study to be shortened from the proposed 18 months in order to make it more compatible with the Eastern Economic Corridor Development plan from the government. Instead, THAI would have to draft a framework for the project in three months and finish the detailed plan in nine.
The airline is also looking for joint investors for this project and sees the two aircraft manufacturers, Airbus and Boeing perfect for the role. At the same time, as THAI board Chairman Areepong Bhoocha-Oom says, Thai Airways is also preparing to start talks with five airline operators about forming a network for the aircraft maintenance centre at U-Tapao International Airport.
