A Burmese airline inaugurated a new service between Yangon and Phuket International Airport. It will operate on Thursdays and Sundays. Yesterday, the Bangkok Post said that Myanmar Airways International held a press conference to talk about the trip.

The new flight intends to assist migratory workers and visitors with extended stays. According to MAI Sales and Marketing Manager Sathit Rodnimit, a one-way ticket to Yangon costs 4,700 baht for migrant workers in Phuket who desire to return home. According to Sathit, a large number of legal migrant workers want to visit their hometowns in Myanmar.

Sathit stated that the flight is also intended for Phuket's foreign visitors. He said that the price of a round-trip ticket with 30 kg of checked baggage begins at 6,000 baht.

According to Phuket's Deputy Governor Pichet, there are presently 47,000 foreign labourers requesting for work permits in Phuket. However, he also expressed his hope that wealthy Burmese visitors would visit Phuket.

In July, the director-general of the Department of Employment, Pairoj Chotikasathien, said that there were around 2.5 million documented migrant workers in Thailand. In that month, the Cabinet approved labour management plans enabling documented Cambodian, Laotian, and Myanmaran employees to remain until February 13, 2025.

The great majority of Burmese migrants in Thailand are economic migrants, although others are fleeing persecution. This is especially true for minority communities like the Karen Hill tribe. According to a study done by the Thai Ministry of the Interior, 4.3% of illegal labour migrants from Myanmar and Cambodia entered Thailand due to political (persecution) and labour conscription.
