Ministers Rajata Rajatanavin and Kobkarn Wattanavrangkul of the Public Health and Tourism and Sports offices respectively, dropped by the Suvarnabhumi Airport to check how effectively it conducts Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) screening. Both ministers also encouraged the use of masks and hand sanitizers among passengers coming in from ME countries and South Korea as well.
Minister Rajata disclosed that additional thermoscan camera was fitted at one of the airport's terminals to boost MERS monitoring. Closer watch is being done on passengers arriving from South Korea, Saudi Arabia, Iran, Jordan, Omar, Qatar, and UAE - regions where MERS cases have been recorded.
It is estimated that around 30,000 travelers from these regions land at Suvarnabhumi Airport each day. Visitors who are screened and detected as suffering from fever are immediately quarantined and subsequently brought to the hospital. Those in charge of screening also ask visitors to share their contact infos.
The Minister declared afterwards that the airport follows the screening standards set by the World Health Organization. Part of the procedure involves reminding travelers to follow instructions from screening personnel and advising same on the steps to be done when suffering from fever.
Those who are feeling unwell upon arrival must coordinate with a Health Ministry officer who will assist in transporting the passenger to the hospital. That way, the possibility of spreading the virus is avoided.
Incidentally, South Korea's EXO band will also be strictly screened upon their arrival. The band is scheduled to perform in Thailand.
The Director of Department of Disease Control reminded that no one is exempt from the screening process, especially those coming from countries earlier mentioned.
Meanwhile, Minister Rajata gave an update on the Omani man who came to Thailand who was unfortunately carrying the disease. He said that the man is still at the Bamrasnaradura Infectious Diseases Institute but is feeling better now compared to previous days. He no longer has fever and that family members who were also quarantined did not develop the disease.
