The long-awaited expansion of the Phuket Airport is finally reaching its final stages with the trial run of the new passenger terminal next Sunday (14th February).

The new terminal building will have four storeys and is a big part of the B5.14 billion expansion of the airport.

Phuket Airport is right now the third busiest airport in Thailand, right after Suvarnabhumi Airport in Bangkok and Don Mueang International Airport.

The first flight from the Phuket Airport after the works are complete will be Thai Airways International flight from Hong Kong.

This will be a good test to see if the arrival section of the new terminal is as good as expected. Following this flight, the airport will run an additional series of tests.

These testes will continue until May this year. The terminal is expected to be in full service and officially opened on 1st June, 2016.

The new Phuket Airport passenger terminal will be essential to preventing jamming the airport, especially during holiday surges.

In 2015, the airport handled 12.9 million passengers. It is designed for 6.5 million passengers a year. This was also an increase of 12.8 per cent compared to 2014. The number of domestic passengers in 2015 was 5.90 million and of international passengers was 6.95 million.

The new terminal will be able to process about 5 million passengers going through it every ear.

Meanwhile, the existing terminal at Phuket Airport is due for renovation, which will be done by the Thailand state-controlled company AoT (Airports of Thailand). AoT operates six major airports in the country.

Renovating the old terminal should be completed in several stages so that the airport does not close entirely.

Once the existing terminal is renovated and the new one completed, the old terminal will be used for domestic flights.

Phuket International Airport Director Monrudee Gettuphan said:

"Given that the airport's existing facilities have been able to cope with more than 12.5 million passengers a year - the technical capacity of the fully expanded airport - the new terminal should be able to deal with a larger scale of passenger traffic than stipulated."
